We all find ourselves with empty spaces in our lives, spaces that we do our best to fill with family, friends, hobbies, and careers.

In this story, I decided to make the metaphor explicit, and I added a dash of irony. In a way, the “Broken Symmetry” series is all about empty spaces, starting with the empty spaces in the tunnel underneath Texas. Many of the characters in the series find themselves with empty spaces in their lives, but it takes Anita to realize that there’s a way to make an empty space work for them.
